Abstract
Coordination complexes derived from a new macrocyclic ligand with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) metal ions were synthesized and characterized. The Schiff base ligand was prepared by the condensation of 1-(5-bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(furan-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione with o-phenylenediamine. The synthesized metal complexes were characterized by conductivity, UV–Visible, FTIR, ^1H NMR, TGA-DTA, and XRD analyses. The results indicated that all the complexes are non-electrolytic in nature and exhibit a hexadentate coordination mode through four nitrogen atoms of the azomethine groups. The ligand and its metal complexes were evaluated in vitro for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against selected microorganisms using Gentamycin, Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Nystatin, and Griseofulvin as standard drugs. The synthesized complexes demonstrated higher biological activities than the corresponding standard drugs, indicating their potential antimicrobial properties.
